Course description

TUTOR: Petra Weber DATE: TBA TIME: 9.30am – 4.00pm Books in Japan (和本, wahon or 和装本, wasouhon) have a long history, which begins in the late 8th century AD (768AD to 770AD). In this Japanese bookbinding class, we will make the traditional four-hole (yutsome toji) book, with variations: kangxi, hempleaf and tortoiseshell. We will also make an accordion book and an account book. Materials are provided. Bring your usual tools if you like, but tools are also available for use at the bindery. Hand-eye coordination and dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper. You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools, but good coordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
