The Bindery

Course description

TUTOR: Karen Vidler DATES: 19th – 22nd June 2025 TIME: 9.00am – 5.00pm In this 4 day course you will be learning techniques for reattaching boards on leather and cloth bindings. Karen writes: "As we have 4 days I would like to start with some simple spine-on techniques such as textile sutures and East Asian repair paper joints. We will then move on to more complex spine-off techniques such as xpanding braid and cord extensions. I would like to demonstrate partial board slotting and when to use a 'Ned' to assist with reattaching weak boards. I will demonstrate simple ways to strengthen cloth and leather in preparation for the board reattachment techniques to prevent further damage while carrying out any of the techniques." This workshop is intended for those with some bookbinding experience, practising bookbinders, book restorers and conservators. What you must bring: You will need to bring in several books to practice on. But, two techniques can be used on one book with both boards detached - this is a useful comparison exercise. In preparation for the workshop it would be great if you could send Karen pics of your books. A tool list and examples of the types of damaged books it would be good to bring will be sent closer to the workshop.  *Please note* There will be a materials fee to be paid at the course. **
